AOC - DC Caribbean Catering

Caribbean Food:

The Caribbean region is rich in culinary traditions. It is well-known for its cuisine, ranging from simple fish to hundreds of rice and bean dishes, and spicy and piquant curries, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The cultural influence on Caribbean cuisine is so vast that it is much too difficult to capture here. However, it is this vastness that makes Caribbean food one of the most popular and loved cuisines in the world. Caribbean food is both familiar and different because it is the nexus from which many culinary influences flow.

Inhabitants and Settlers who Influenced Caribbean Cuisine:

  • The Caribbean was inhabited by the Taino Indians (Native) who were Arawak people. They were the first indigenous peoples of the Caribbean and Florida. At the time of European contact in the late 15th century, they were the principal inhabitants of most of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti), and Puerto Rico.

  • European Imperialist/Colonizers: The English, Dutch, French, Italian & Spaniards.

  • The African people who were forcibly brought to the islands by the Europeans They were from across the African Continent, but mainly West Africa.

  • The Chinese and Indian people (Asia) who migrated to the Caribbean as indentured servants.

  • Middle Eastern/Arab people who migrated to the islands in the early 20th century to escape economic hardships, civil unrest, and religious persecution.

Many foods served in the Caribbean today still reflect the influence of these cultures at one point or another. Conversely, Caribbean cuisine has influenced other cooking styles. Cajun seasoning, for example, hails from Louisiana, but Cajun seasoning is a great blend of Caribbean, Native American, West African, and French cooking. Today, Jamaican food is one of the most popular cuisines in the Caribbean. This can be credited to the famous Jerk and Brown Stew Chicken dishes, but we can assure you that all of the Caribbean islands offer something unique. There's no question that Caribbean food is influential and has taken the best from all these cultures and culinary traditions to make a beautiful menu that reflects the vibrancy and boldness of the Caribbean people and terrain.
